If you don’t have the patience (or the canning skills) for homemade jam, this blueberry compote recipe will become a fast favorite. It’s positively bursting with blueberry flavor and you only need 3 ingredients and 5 minutes of cooking to make it. Texture-wise, it’s kind of a saucier version of blueberry preserves, with a chunky texture and only a little bit of gelling (you get more if you add the optional chia seeds). The sauciness means won’t want it in a PB&J, but you will want it on pretty much everything else you eat, from fluffy gluten-free blueberry pancakes to cottage cheese ice cream!

  • Honey – Maple syrup, agave, or regular sugar can also be used for a vegan blueberry compote.
  • Lemon juice – Brightens the flavor and balances the sweetness to keep the compote from being cloying.
  • Chia seeds (optional) – This will make your compote thicker and add some extra fiber too.

How To Make Blueberry Compote

This simple compote comes together in just a few easy steps. Here’s how it’s done!

  • Combine the ingredients. Add the blueberries, honey, and lemon juice to a small saucepan. (If you’re using frozen blueberries, there’s no need to thaw them first.)
  • Bring to a boil. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. 
  • Simmer until thick. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally while the blueberries break down and the sauce thickens.
  • Stir in the chia seeds. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the chia seeds, if you’re using them. 
  • Let it rest. Allow the compote to sit for 5 to 10 minutes so it can thicken before serving.

Here are a few additional pointers for this blueberry compote recipe.

  • Adjust the sweetness. Taste the compote after simmering and add more sweetener if needed. Blueberries can vary in flavor, with some being more on the tart side and others sweeter.
  • Tweak the texture. Lightly mash some of the berries with a spoon while cooking. If you prefer whole berries, simply simmer without mashing.
  • Add extra thickness. If you skip the chia seeds and want a thicker compote, simmer it a few minutes longer.

  • 2 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • ¼ cup honey (or maple syrup, sugar, agave, etc.)
