This homemade vegan ranch dressing has been a staple in my kitchen for years because it is creamy, tangy, and packed with classic ranch flavor and made entirely with plant-based ingredients. I use raw cashews, fresh lemon juice, vinegar, and dill to create the familiar flavor in just 5 minutes.

Ranch dressing is one of those versatile recipes that I usually reach for at least once a week, much like my vegan BBQ sauce, during grilling season. It is great as a dip or dressing, and if you ask my boys, they would tell you that they could eat it with a spoon. If you love the tangy flavor of traditional ranch, but cannot tolerate dairy, you need to try this recipe.

I first created this recipe after trying so many store-bought vegan ranch dressings that just did not capture the flavor I grew up loving. This was similar to my vegan tartar sauce journey. Some were too sweet, others tasted too much like raw cashews, and none had that tangy edge I was looking for. I started testing different combinations with my harshest critics trying every batch. When it comes to sauces, my boys do not play around. And finally we landed on this recipe. I am not exaggerating when I say that not a week has gone by where I have not made vegan ranch dressing.

I love that this homemade vegan ranch dressing tastes so delicious without using mayonnaise, sour cream, or dairy. And if you know what goes into a standard ranch dressing, that makes this recipe all the more impressive. The cashews blend into a silky base, and the combination of lemon juice, vinegar, dill, garlic, onion, and parsley creates that quintessential ranch flavor that is perfect for dipping just about anything.

Just because this is a vegan homemade ranch dressing does not mean that it is any more complex to make. I start by letting the plant-based milk, vinegar, and lemon juice sit together for a few minutes before blending them with the cashews and salt until completely smooth. Once the base is creamy, I pulse in the herbs and seasonings so they stay visible throughout the dressing instead of disappearing completely. After a little time in the refrigerator, the ranch thickens into the perfect consistency for dipping or drizzling.

Here is a little fun fact: Ranch dressing has been the number one dressing in the USA since 1992. This does not surprise me at all since I have had a love affair with ranch for longer than I would like to admit, which is why it was so important for me to create a vegan version that lives up to the original. A few years ago, my family and I went to a restaurant that catered to a plant-based lifestyle, and my boys were excited to try the restaurant-grade ranch dressing. After one taste, I could see the disappointment in their faces. And I had to hide my smugness when their faces lit up after I told them I would make some at home. Do not buy another store-bought vegan dressing; try this recipe instead and taste the difference.

🥘 Ingredients

This is everything I use to make homemade vegan ranch dressing, with its trademark creamy texture and tangy flavor:

Creamy base: I use raw cashews and unsweetened plain cashew or almond milk and blend it into an incredibly smooth, rich dressing without any dairy.

Acids: Fresh lemon juice and distilled white vinegar give my dressing the bright flavor most associated with ranch. Together they also help balance the natural sweetness of cashews.

Seasonings: A combination of dried parsley, dill, garlic powder, dried minced onion, onion powder, mustard powder, sea salt, and black pepper gives the dressing the savory, aromatic, and herby flavor.

🔪 How To Make

All I need is 5 minutes and my trusty blender to make homemade vegan ranch dressing. This is how I do it:

Add base ingredients and acids to the blender: I combine the plant-based milk, lemon juice, and vinegar, then let the mixture sit while I gather the remaining ingredients. Next, I blend until completely smooth and creamy.

Add seasonings: After that, I add the parsley, dill, garlic, onion, mustard powder, and pepper and pulse just until everything is evenly mixed.

Chill and serve: I transfer the ranch to an airtight glass container and place it in the fridge to thicken before serving.

My #1 Secret Tip for this homemade vegan ranch dressing recipe is to let the ranch chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. The flavors continue to infuse as it rests and the dressing thickens into a deliciously creamy consistency.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Blend base first: Before adding the herbs and spices, I make sure the cashews are fully blended. A silky base gives the dressing the closest texture to traditional ranch.
  • Pulse herbs: I like adding the dried herbs after the base is smooth, then pulsing just enough to combine them. This keeps little flecks of parsley and dill visible throughout the dressing instead of blending them completely, which may give the dressing a slight green or brown tinge.
  • Use fresh lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives the dressing a much brighter, fresher flavor than bottled juice, which tends to have a bitter aftertaste. It also does a good job of balancing the richness of the cashews.
  • Taste after chilling: The flavor changes slightly as the dressing rests. I always taste it after it has been in the fridge before deciding whether it needs another pinch of salt, dill, or an extra squeeze of lemon.
  • Adjust: If I am serving this as a dip, I leave it thick. For salads, I whisk in 1-2 tablespoons of plant-based milk until it reaches the consistency I want.

📖 Variations

Perfecting my homemade vegan ranch dressing was one thing, but having the freedom to create new variations was another. These are 3 versions I love making for parties, lunches, or a sneaky bowl of tortilla chips:

Avocado ranch: For an extra creamy dressing, I blend in 1/2 of a ripe avocado along with the cashews, then finish everything with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a little chopped cilantro. My boys love this dip with baked corn tortilla chips.

Chipotle twist: Whenever I want a smoky kick with a bit of heat, I blend a chipotle pepper in adobo with a pinch of smoked paprika into the finished ranch. I love using this over tacos and nachos.

Roasted garlic and honey: Instead of garlic powder, I blend 1-3 cloves of roasted garlic into the base along with 1-2 teaspoons of vegan honey. This creates a lovely tangy and sweet dressing with a mellow savory flavor. My husband loves eating raw veggies with this dip.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

This vegan homemade ranch dressing is fantastic for crudite boards with savory chips and julienned carrots and cucumbers. But I also recommend trying it with grilled veggie kabobs or as a dip with margherita flatbread. And it is an absolute must for vegan buffalo cauliflower wings, or over crispy baked buffalo cauliflower tacos.

There was a time when ranch was the only way I could get my boys to eat raw veggies. I used to serve it with their favorite vegan gluten free chicken nuggets and healthy baked French fries, but when I drizzled it over a spinach and arugula salad, and they ate every last bite, I knew it was a winner. Now if they are fussy and I want them to eat vegetables, I just make sure there is ranch nearby.

🧊 Storing And ♨️ Reheating

Refrigeration: I store the ranch in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Freezing: I freeze the ranch in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. I like placing a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface before sealing the container to help reduce freezer burn.

Reheating: If frozen, I thaw the ranch in the refrigerator overnight, then give it a good whisk or quick blend before serving. This dressing is best served cold, so there is no need to reheat it.

❓Recipe FAQs

What can I do to get my ranch smooth without a high-powered blender?

I always use a high-powered blender, especially if I am using raw cashews. But there are a few tricks that help regular blenders yield a silky consistency. You could use a coffee grinder for the cashews before adding them to a blender, or you could soak the cashews overnight. If you have forgotten to soak them, I recommend boiling them for 20-30 minutes to help soften them quickly. Make sure to drain and cool them thoroughly before blending.

Can I use fresh herbs?

Yes! Fresh herbs create a much brighter flavor, but I use 3 times more parsley and dill than I would if they were dried. I also prefer to finely chop them separately and stir them through the dressing after it has been blended so that they do not become overprocessed or turn the dressing green. Fresh chives are another great herb to add to ranch dressing.

Can I make this recipe nut-free?

Yes, you can. One of my readers had great success using raw sunflower seeds and soy milk instead of cashews and nut milk. I recommend soaking them in boiling water for 30 minutes, then draining them before blending. The finished dressing has a slightly different, earthier flavor, but it is still very tasty.
