17 Side DIshes To Serve With Steak

I believe that steak side dishes should taste just as amazing as the main course. From a lemony arugula salad to a creamy root vegetable mash, these are the sides I come back to time and again, and they never miss!

Best side dishes to serve with steal featuring roasted potatoes.

Whenever I’m planning a dinner with pan-seared ribeye steak, filet mignon, or grilled ribeye (all foolproof, by the way), the sides are honestly the first thing I think about. Because the right combination of mains and sides is what turns a simple protein into a balanced, really satisfying meal.

Over time, I’ve found myself building my plate the same way. I start with a side of something warm and comforting, like classic mashed potatoes. Then, I serve up something light and fresh to cut through the richness (I love my arugula salad for this!). My biggest tip: just try not to double up on heavy sides. I’ve done that before, and let’s just say it was a little too much!

This is my default when I want that classic steakhouse feel. Creamy, buttery, and exactly what you want next to a perfectly cooked steak. If I’m hosting, this is always on the table!

I always lean toward sweet mashed potatoes when I want something a bit lighter and slightly sweet. It actually complements a richer, savory steak very well!

This is for all the corn lovers! It’s lightly sweet, creamy, and always one of the first sides to disappear. I love how this adds a nice contrast to the savory steak and feels very nostalgic, especially since this is a big holiday side dish in my family.

A must-make during the spring season, and one of the easiest sides to throw in the oven while the steak cooks. It’s quick, light, and always works, especially with a squeeze of lemon right before serving.

This is more of a “plan ahead” side for me. It takes a bit more time, but when I want something extra indulgent (think holidays or dinner parties), it’s always worth it.

The key to a “great” roasted broccoli is the time and temp. But also the topping/seasoning. The garlic, parmesan, and lemon really elevates this!

A classic for a reason! These mushrooms are rich, buttery, and the kind of side that just belongs next to steak, especially if you spoon a little over the top.

My lighter swap when I still want that creamy texture without feeling too full. I especially love this with richer steaks, as it keeps the whole plate from feeling too heavy. And it feels good knowing I’m getting extra veggies in!

This salad is a bit heartier than arugula and great if I’m prepping ahead. Kale holds up really well throughout the day/night. And this specific recipe tastes amazing with the garlic infused oil.

Steak Sides From My Cookbook

If you have my Downshiftology Healthy Meal Prep cookbook, don’t forget that it’s jam packed with tons of sides perfect for enjoying alongside steak! Here are a few of my favorites that work so well:

  • Root vegetable mash: This simple blend of parsnips, turnips, and celeriac (celery root) is naturally lower in carbs than mashed potatoes, plus a serious amount of garlic and chives turns it into one tasty side dish.
  • Balsamic roasted mushrooms: These are garlicky with a pop of fresh herbs, and both the balsamic vinegar and maple syrup add a touch of sweetness.
  • Grilled corn and zucchini salad: Grilled zucchini and corn are tossed with jalapeño, cilantro, onion, garlic, and lime juice—perfect for summer!
  • Roasted green beans almondine: Fresh, snappy green beans turn almost fancy when topped with crunchy, toasted almonds, and a good amount of roasted garlic.

If you make any of these steak sides, let me know how they turn out in the comments below! Your review will help other readers in the community. And if you’re looking for more healthy food inspiration, join my free newsletter here.
