Tucked on the island of Ios, Greece, Calilo is a luxury resort that might just be upping the ante for the Greek honeymoon, where whimsical art, nature, and good food meet on beautiful beaches.
After a three-day, 300 guest wedding whirlwind, we touched down in Greece to begin our honeymoon – exhausted, elated, and ready to exhale. We arrived at Calilo expecting it to be just our starting point, but quickly realized it was the destination itself.
Santorini and Mykonos often grab the headlines when it comes to Greek luxury. But a property on the historically known “party island”, Ios, is transforming what vacationing in Greece can look like. Calilo, short for “Create A Life You Can Fall In Love With,” feels like something of a sun-drenched, Gaudí-esque fever dream. It’s equal parts colorful, whimsical, unabashedly maximalist, yet undeniably luxurious.
The Backstory
Calilo is the passion project of Angelos Michalopoulos — a Greek businessman, philanthropist, sculptor, and artist (the list truly goes on). There’s no designer or architect behind the property; every inch of it is Michalopoulos’s own creation, and that’s the only way he’d have it. Every corner of Calilo carries his art and writings, almost feeling like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. It’s a world apart from the neutral palettes and whitewashed minimalism that dominate much of the Cyclades.
Beneath all the artistry lies a serious commitment to preservation. Michalopoulos and his family have purchased over 1,000 acres of Ios (nearly a third of the island) and pledged to develop no more than one percent of it. He built Ios’s first fire department, sources marble from local quarries and even crafts the resort’s furniture from olive trees grown on the property. The rest of the land remains wild, protecting Ios from the fate of its overbuilt neighbors.

The Arrival
Getting to the resort takes a little patience, about 45 minutes by car from the ferry port, but Calilo makes it painless. Pick up is smooth with the hotel’s van scooping you up right from the dock. The resort is as secluded as they come, so strap in for the winding ride. If you don’t get car sick, the views of olive trees and stone chapels will be a treat for you. And if you’re fancying something a little more direct, Calilo is equipped with a private helipad that can pick you up from Santorini, Mykonos, or Athens.
And then comes the entrance. A wooden pathway snakes through life-size sculptures, mosaics and trickling waterfalls. When you think it’s over, another stretch appears, this one lined with installations that invite you to scribble down your worries and toss them into a tunnel – a symbolic cleanse before stepping inside. It’s theatrical, a little over the top, and completely on brand for Calilo. And just like that, the mission of Calilo, “to use art to uplift guests, and provide them with a playful environment to let their guard down, think less, and feel more” comes to life.

The Rooms
If you made plans to explore the island, leave them at the door. I assure you, you’ll want to spend every minute soaking up the space you are in. Take your pick from one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites. Each of the 36 suites at Calilo come with its own identity in the form of outrageous design touches, from in-room waterfalls, overwater beds, and pool-based movie theaters.

As Michalopoulos puts it: “When people go into a room at Calilo, it will keep on surprising them,” Michalopoulos says. “The room will not be revealed in one shot. You’ll go from a tunnel to a bridge over a pool to a staircase to another pool, and so on.”
Water plays a starring role in Calilo’s design. “Water has freedom. It can assume any shape, which means lack of routine, which means unpredictability. It has a playfulness that can gently push somebody to feel playful without them understanding what’s happening.” That spirit flows through every corridor of the resort.

We stayed in the aptly named, Passage to Love Suite, built for honeymooners in mind. The design is romantic and playful, with hidden nooks and lounges overlooking the mountains on one side and the Aegean Sea on the other. The outdoor space alone spans 2,800 square feet and comes with not one but three swimming pools, floral-draped swinging daybeds, and the pièce de resistance, a 25-foot water pathway that leads into an indoor cave pool. Yes, my jaw was on the floor.

Inside, it’s just as dramatic, filled with floor-to-ceiling black and white marble that’s been handcrafted and individually placed. The stick-figure motif you’ll find on sculptures across Calilo, is also seen on the railings, floor tiles and headboards in your room. Even the turndown service borders on performance art. Come evening, the headboard glows, music fills the room, and a poetry book is left open on the bed to just the right page. It’s over-the-top in the best way possible.

The Beach
Calilo sits on Papas Beach, the resort’s own private beach, where the water is crystal clear, and the sand is powder soft. Towering sandstone cliffs frame the cove. Lined along the shore are thatched cabanas with some of the largest turquoise daybeds I’ve sunken into. Prepare to spend your day horizontal, ordering cocktails and mezze platters without ever getting up. It’s secluded and peaceful, without much foot traffic, which feels rare for the Cyclades.

The Dining
Whether you want to dine in sunken water tables, in the comfort of your room, or by the rock pool, here, there are options that make it easy. There’s one main restaurant on the property that serves food all day long. With its “field to fork” ethos, you’ll find the Mediterranean diet in full force here, with produce grown on the island and fish caught that morning. Room service is also available 24 hours a day, and with a quick ring a late-night cheeseburger or Greek salad could be arranged alongside a bottle of wine, should you feel so inclined.

The Tasting Menu at CHES
Named after the resort’s ethos – Celebrate Happiness, Explain Sadness – CHES is Calilo’s open-air fine-dining restaurant overlooking the sea. It’s elegant but unpretentious, the kind of place where a linen dress and sandals fit right in.
The nine-course tasting menu is a love letter to the Greek islands, told plate by plate with wines to match. It begins with an ode to bread: nut-studded loaves, olive oil focaccia, and rustic sourdough served with olive oil pressed from Calilo’s groves. Then the journey unfolds. From Naxos, you’ll try a chickpea falafel tart with zucchini and sumac sauce; from Sifnos, a fragrant red shrimp tartare with aubergine and chili is best eaten by hand. Santorini appears in a fava bean soup with seabass and cuttlefish, plated to look like fish swimming in golden seas, while Mykonos is captured in an onion pie layered with beef skirt and slow-cooked in port wine. Each course arrives with a perfectly matched wine, ranging from a rosé-like white with herbal depth to a wild-fermented orange wine that mirrors the depth of the dishes. Dessert turns playful: an almond parfait “volcano” that oozes lemon mousse and a cheesecake spun from feta and draped in honey. Dinner at CHES feels both grounded and dreamlike: Greek storytelling wrapped in fine dining.

The Spa & Wellness
Calilo is home to a three-story spa and fitness haven that only seems to get better with time. There are indoor and outdoor pools, yoga sessions, and a full-scale gym – all decorated in the resort’s signature sense of whimsy.

The spa itself is pure Dr. Seuss fantasy, with swirling floral structures and massage tables suspended above pools of water. Book the Couple’s Signature Ritual, it’s a sensory massage using olive oil, volcanic stones and sea salt from the nearby beaches. Time slows down but slips away, and no one is in a hurry to rush you to leave once it’s over. Rumor has it the property is opening a hilltop padel court and mountain biking trails in 2026.

The Verdict
There’s a “you-had-to-be-there” magic to Calilo. It’s the kind of place that feels like it could only exist in your imagination. Getting there takes some effort, but once you step through those doors, everything else disappears. Calilo isn’t just another luxury resort in Greece. It’s a love story written in mosaics and color: one that reminds you what travel is supposed to feel like: freeing, playful, and deeply, unapologetically human.
