FrieslandCampina acquires Wisconsin Whey Protein | Nutritional Outlook

In a recent press release, Royal FrieslandCampina N.V. has made plans to acquire Wisconsin Whey Protein, a whey protein isolates producer in the United States (US). From this acquisition, FrieslandCampina Ingredients will “significantly increase” their total whey protein capacity.1 Additionally, the company will be able to further grow in the European, Asian, and North American marketplaces.

Wisconsin Whey Protein has facilities residing in the “heart” of the US’ dairy region and are being expanded to increase their whey protein isolate production capacity. The whey protein isolates producer will be mingled into the FrieslandCampina Ingredients business group where they will be better able to assist customers through active, performance, and medical nutrition market segments.1

Anne Peter Lindeboom, President of FrieslandCampina Ingredients, said, “By joining forces with Wisconsin Whey Protein, a respected producer of high-quality whey isolates with a strong focus on production and innovation, we bring together expanded capacity in the United States with our deep expertise in protein technology, research and application development. The acquisition will enable us to scale our proven successes in high-end protein offerings to customers in the United States and worldwide. All in the pursuit of providing nutritional solutions that meet both consumer preferences and needs, to help people get the most out of life, always.”1

Wisconsin Whey Protein’s founder and Chief Executive Officer K Kachadurian added, “There’s a natural fit between Wisconsin Whey Protein’s entrepreneurial spirit and FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ global growth ambition. I’m proud that our team will become part of such a purpose-driven company—one making a meaningful impact.”1

Another term of the acquisition is that FrieslandCampina will begin collaboration with Stainless Technologies, a sister company of Wisconsin Whey Protein, and constructs state-of-the-art process technology solutions.

A 2024 IFIC food and health survey2, found that protein supplementation has become a popular ingredient to be incorporated into nutritional food and beverages. In 2025, 71% of consumers were actively prioritizing protein intake, this is an increase from 59% in 2022, as well as 67% in 2023. According to the survey, consumers are interested in higher protein diets as they see it as a good thing to consider for their general health.2 Consumers are also interested in high protein for fitness and weight management. Complete proteins that include all nine essential amino acids and specific amino acid benefits are becoming more familiar to consumers.2 From the food and health survey, the market for whey protein is anticipated to increase at 6.6% per annum until the year 2030.

FrieslandCampina has been making investments in the global protein marketplace to help meet the growing demands for protein offerings. According to the press release1, some of these investments consist of the “upcoming opening of an application center in North America, adding to recent launches in Asia and Europe, and significant whey protein capacity expansions at various FrieslandCampina production sites in the Netherlands.”

“This strategic move marks a milestone in FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ journey to become a top three global player in the performance and active nutrition markets while maintaining its stronghold as market leader in the early life and medical nutrition markets. It supports the company’s long-term plan to expand into high-growth markets and build a future-focused portfolio that meets global health and wellness needs,” the press release mentioned.1

In the acquisition of Wisconsin Whey Protein, financial details were not disclosed. The transaction will be subject to customary conditions that include regulatory approvals.2
