Sloppy monster sandwich

This an easy and fun recipe to make for Halloween time. The whole family can help put this together.

The monster takes a normal Sloppy Joe and turns it into a spooky-looking spider monster, complete with onion ring legs and black olive eyes. And even cheese “fangs” for that extra scary look.

Kids in particular will no doubt enjoy devouring their “monster” of a sandwich. And unlike some of those ideas you see that look really cool but are impossible to replicate at home, these go together with minimal fuss. I hope you enjoy, and Happy Halloween!

For the filling:

  • 1 pounds ground beef
  • 1 ribs celery finely diced
  • 1/2 large onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper minced; I prefer red ones
  • 1-1/2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 teaspoons molasses
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 4 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1-1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-1/2 tsp hot sauce Frank’s or other Louisiana hot sauce
  • 3/4 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar

Other:

  • 4 sandwich buns toasted
  • 16 frozen onion rings baked according to package
  • 2 ounces provolone sliced
  • 4 pitted black olives sliced in half
  • Place ground chuck, celery, onion, red pepper, and garlic in a large deep skillet or dutch oven and cook, breaking up beef, until it is browned; drain off any excess fat.

  • Add remaining ingredients and stir.

  • Simmer mixture, covered, over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until mixture is as thick as you like.

  • Serve on toasted buns, decorating with onion rings for legs, cheese wedges for teeth, black olives for eyes, which look best with a dot of ketchup in the center for red pupils.
