High-Protein Wendy’s Frosty (Copycat Recipe)

This high-protein Wendy’s Frosty copycat is thick, creamy and just as chocolatey as the original, but packs 28 grams of protein. It blends up in just minutes with a blender, no special equipment or freezing required.

A Wendy’s Frosty is one of the few fast food items I have real nostalgia for. Growing up it was the whole reason to go, and I was firmly on team dip-the-fries-in-it, which I stand by to this day. What I am less into now is the 50+ grams of sugar. So I made a version at home that hits the same thick, chocolatey, spoon-required texture with ingredients I actually want to eat.

Frozen banana and ice do the heavy lifting, Greek yogurt and chocolate whey protein handle the creaminess, and a pinch of salt at the end makes the chocolate taste noticeably richer.

Why I Love This High Protein Frosty

Woman (Brittany Mullins) wearing a white shirt and sipping a green smoothie.
  • It actually feels like a treat: This isn’t just chocolate protein powder blended with milk and called a Frosty. It’s thick, creamy, chocolatey and totally hits the spot when a dessert craving strikes.
  • Packed with protein: Between the whey protein and Greek yogurt, you’re getting a solid dose of protein in something that tastes way more exciting than your usual shake.
  • The texture is SO good: The frozen banana and ice are key here. They give you that super thick, spoonable consistency that makes a Frosty a Frosty.
  • Ready whenever the craving hits: No drive-thru necessary! Everything goes straight into the blender and you’ve got a cold, chocolatey treat in just a few minutes.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients measured out for a high protein copycat Wendy's frosty: Ice, salt, greek yogurt, milk, protein powder, cacoa, banana, and vanilla.
  • ice – essential for getting that thick, frosty consistency. You’ll need about 1 cup.
  • milk – I use Fairlife for the extra protein and the creamier texture, but any milk works. Keep it minimal though, since more liquid means a thinner result.
  • chocolate whey protein powder – adds chocolate flavor and gives this Frosty its protein boost. I’ve used both Truvani and Clean Simple Eats with great results.
  • frozen banana – just half a banana adds natural sweetness and helps create that thick, creamy texture without making the Frosty taste overly banana-y.
  • Greek yogurt – full-fat gives you the creamiest texture and the richest flavor. It also adds tang and a bit more protein.
  • cocoa powder – bumps up the chocolate flavor so this tastes more like a chocolate treat and less like a basic protein shake.
  • vanilla extract – a little vanilla rounds out the chocolate flavor and gives it more of that classic dessert taste.
  • salt – don’t skip it! Just a pinch helps bring out the chocolate flavor.

Substitutions

  • Swap the protein powder: I’ve used both plant-based and whey chocolate protein powder and both work well. Use your favorite brand, or swap in vanilla for a slightly different flavor. Just know that different brands and types absorb liquid differently, so you may need to adjust the milk or ice slightly to get that thick Frosty texture.
  • No banana: Half an avocado or a quarter cup of frozen cauliflower rice both add creaminess without the banana flavor. You will want to add a little sweetener since the banana is doing that job.
  • Greek yogurt alternatives: Cottage cheese blends up just as creamy and adds a little more protein. Any dairy-free yogurt works too.

How to Make this High Protein Wendy’s Frosty

Protein powder, frozen banana, yogurt, cacao powder, milk, and vanilla in a blender.

Step 1: Add the ice, milk, protein powder, banana, Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt to a high-powered blender.

Step 2: Blend until thick and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. Taste, add more cocoa if you want it richer, and serve right away.

Brittany’s Tips

  • Use a tamper if your blender has one: This mixture is thick enough that it will stall out and spin around the blades without one. The tamper is what keeps everything moving without forcing you to add more liquid.
  • Add milk one tablespoon at a time: The instinct when the blender struggles is to pour in more liquid, and that is how you lose the Frosty texture entirely. Go slowly and stop as soon as it is blending.
  • Taste before you pour: Protein powders vary a lot in sweetness and chocolate intensity. Some need an extra half tablespoon of cocoa, some do not need any more at all.
  • Make the fries too: If you are going to commit to the full experience, my air fryer french fries are the move. Crispy, salty, and exactly what this is meant to be dipped in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a healthy Wendy’s Frosty?

It’s a lighter, protein-packed spin on the classic Wendy’s Frosty made with Greek yogurt, protein powder, banana and cocoa powder. It’s still creamy and chocolatey, but with ingredients that make it much more filling.

Does this actually taste like a Wendy’s Frosty?

It is not identical, and I would not tell you otherwise. It is thick, cold, and chocolatey in the same way, but you will taste the banana and the tang from the Greek yogurt. What it does deliver is the same craving satisfaction without the sugar crash.

Can I make this without protein powder?

You can, but the texture and the protein both take a hit. Increase the Greek yogurt to a half cup and add a tablespoon of cocoa powder plus a little maple syrup. It will be thinner and less sweet than the version with protein powder.

How much protein is in this Wendy’s Frosty copycat?

Each one has 28 grams, which comes from the chocolate whey protein powder, the Greek yogurt, and the milk. A medium chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s has around 10 grams by comparison, along with significantly more sugar.

  • Add the ice, milk, protein powder, banana, Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and salt to a high-powered blender.

1 cup (~150g) ice, ⅓ cup milk of choice , 1 scoop whey chocolate protein powder, ½ frozen banana, 2 Tablespoons greek yogurt, ½ Tablespoon cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, pinch of salt

  • Blend until thick, smooth, and creamy, using the tamper if your blender has one. Stop and scrape down the sides as needed. You want the mixture to be thick, but if it’s too thick to blend, add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.

  • Taste and add a little more cocoa powder if you’d like a richer chocolate flavor.

  • Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

  • Milk: I use Fairlife high protein milk for the extra protein and creamier texture. Any milk works, but add more only if the blender genuinely cannot move the mixture, and go one tablespoon at a time.
  • Greek yogurt: Full-fat gives the creamiest, richest result. Low-fat works but the texture will be noticeably thinner.
