When vintage kitchen appliances make a comeback, sometimes it’s for style — and sometimes it’s for functionality. The 1990s gave us various devices that were, simply put, built better than today’s machines, and many of these retro appliances are still going strong decades later. Consumers are increasingly turning to secondhand sources, like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, in quest of these older gadgets, which boasted heavier-duty components and superior performance. Even broken machines are being sought and repaired or rebuilt because, in refurbished condition, they can outperform modern versions and even outlive their new owners.
Gone are the days when you bought a new appliance, it lasted a lifetime, and then it was passed to the next generation. Smart technology has turned formerly robust devices, like refrigerators and stoves, into fragile computers prone to developing issues within just a few years. Repairing these high-tech machines is also more expensive and complicated.
Some believe manufacturers have learned the value of lower-quality construction. Through a practice called planned obsolescence, makers allegedly design modern merchandise to break down. Some manufacturers reportedly obstruct the repair process, too, failing to make instructions and parts available. It’s also common for machines to be technology locked, so only a company’s certified technicians can perform repair work. This limits customers to either getting manufacturer-sanctioned repairs — at the maker’s prices and on their terms — or purchasing new machines. Numerous kitchen gadgets, large and small, are simply being thrown out. In 2018, 5.3 million tons of waste were generated from discarded major appliances in the U.S., with 2.2 million tons owing to small appliances (per the EPA). With devices that predate smart technology, though, like those made in the 1990s, these issues disappear — or are much more limited in scope.
The quality of refrigerators has cooled significantly
Inferior materials, construction, and out-of-control “techifying” have subjected many of today’s fridges to premature breakdown. In contrast, ’90s refrigerators featured simpler, more straightforward designs, with nary a computer chip or motherboard in sight. This not only made them longer-lasting, but their construction also made it easier to access key components and perform repairs.
The Energy Star rating system began in the ’90s, encouraging companies to manufacture more energy-efficient appliances. So, while many pre-’90s refrigerators were similarly long-lasting titans, the machines became more power-usage-friendly with the advent of Energy Star. This is another incentive to seek models from that decade — they strike a good balance between sturdy construction and energy efficiency.
Some fridges from the ’90s are so superior that consumers are paying thousands of dollars for certain models — even if they’re broken. The luxury-class Sub-Zero is one example. A new Sub-Zero fridge can cost over $11,000 at the low end to more than $20,000 at the top end. A used one, on the other hand, can be picked up for a fraction of the cost and, often, repaired for mere hundreds. A repaired or rebuilt one can last an additional 20 years or more.
Other long-lasting retro fridges included models made by the Maytag brand. Some Maytag refrigerators sold in the early ’90s were backed by a 10-year guarantee, though they have frequently lasted much, much longer. A circa 1990 ad showed the fictional Maytag repairman kicking a fridge’s exterior, biting the shelves, and even jumping up and down on the drawers, illustrating that this fridge was built with sturdy materials and made to last.
Newer dishwashers aren’t all they’re washed up to be
A similar story emerges with dishwashers — they just aren’t built like they once were. Consumers may wonder if splurging on an expensive dishwasher will solve some of the modern inefficiencies, but the truth is that bygone models just worked better. This is why some shoppers are now paying hundreds for functioning secondhand ’90s-era models, often spending more than they would pay for a brand-new machine.
Dishwashers built in the 1990s used much more water — 10 to 14 gallons per load — quickly and effectively blasting dishes clean. They could finish full washing cycles in 40 minutes or less. But federal mandates have greatly restricted water usage for models made after 2009, significantly impacting their speed and cleaning power. Today’s dishwashers take 90 minutes to two hours, or more, to complete one cycle. If you’re washing a heavy-duty load, like dirty bakeware, pots, or pans, you could be looking at three hours or longer.
Those ’90s-era devices also dried much more efficiently, thanks to huge, exposed heating elements that assaulted dishes with hot air. Once again, government regulations — this time related to energy efficiency — prompted manufacturers to nix heating coils and venting systems dishwashers once had in favor of more complex systems that simply don’t dry as well.
Earlier breakdown is also a problem with new dishwashers, in which smart features like smartphone controllability and autosensing capabilities have been prioritized over durability. As one Reddit poster explained, “The last time I bought a dishwasher (8 [years] ago), the salesman assured me that no matter how much I paid for it, it would only last for a few years. ‘You’re paying for features, not longevity.'”
Modern ovens aren’t so hot
Today’s ovens are another appliance that can be a major letdown, especially considering they’re much more energy efficient and chockful of cutting-edge features than designs of the past. But, when you boil it right down, they just don’t cook as well. As exciting as an AI oven can initially seem, if it’s not great at performing its fundamental function, what good is the ability to livestream food as it bakes or adjust the oven temp using your smartphone?
Modern ovens are touchier in terms of their ventilation needs, so if they aren’t allowed plenty of airflow when installed, heat retention and cooking evenness can be affected. Smart ovens also operate completely differently from their more straightforward predecessors, and the learning curve can be daunting. The various cooking modes and settings can churn out overbaked, underbaked, or dried-out food — especally if you aren’t familiar with how they work. Getting up to speed on using them can feel akin to relearning how to cook, which can get frustrating when you’re simply trying to get dinner on the table. At the end of the day, the much-less-complicated ability to simply dial in a temperature, insert your food, and let it cook can make ’90s ovens much more desirable.
Those high-tech, computerized elements also, once again, can lead to earlier appliance breakdown and restrictive reparability. Older ovens featured individually repairable components that could be fixed using universally standard parts available from many stores and suppliers. This, coupled with simpler design, made repairs much easier, faster, and cheaper. So, if your ’90s-era oven breaks down, odds are good that a quick fix is possible and many more years of usage are ahead.
New KitchenAid stand mixers don’t stand up to the O.G.s
Major appliances aren’t the only kitchen gadgets that were superior in years gone by — many smaller, countertop devices have also degraded in quality and functionality. You’ll pay hundreds for a new KitchenAid stand mixer, for instance, and that price quickly climbs into the thousands with added accessories and attachments. But users report the brand-new models can’t compare to their older KitchenAid devices. “The parts [they] use now are much cheaper[,] and the mixer does not work as well as the old ones,” a Facebook poster stated. “I have two from the early 90s and a 2000ish model,” another Facebook user commented. “They work way better than the newer ones.”
One reported issue with today’s KitchenAids is the use of plastic components that need replacement more frequently than the metal pieces in older models. The motors were also reportedly more robust in yesterday’s machines, churning out more power than current versions. Running a mixer too long can result in the motor overheating in most any gadget, but users say their older KitchenAids can operate for longer without any issues. In contrast, KitchenAid advises operating today’s machines for no more than 2 minutes at a time when performing heavier tasks like mixing yeast breads, and you shouldn’t exceed 6 minutes of use total.
KitchenAids from the ’90s have a reputation for lasting decades, with many stating their 1990s devices are still functioning well. Some owners of newer KitchenAids, however, have experienced machines failing very prematurely — sometimes even on their first usage. “My personal opinion … new ones are absolute garbage,” a Facebook user complained.
Older Cuisinart food processors were a cut above
Retro Cuisinart machines are the holy grail of food processors, lasting decades and often being passed from one generation to the next. Many users report their devices from the 1990s are not only still around but are operating very well. “Mine is a wedding gift from 1993. The marriage didn’t last, but the @cuisinart is STILL going strong!” an Instagram user joked.
It seems newer Cuisinart models, though, don’t quite measure up to those bygone versions. Some consumers state today’s devices don’t last more than a year. “They don’t make [’em] like [they] used to,” another IG user commented. “The new [Cuisinart] motors have all died on me,” stated another poster.
Older Cuisinart food processors were not only built more robustly, but their motors were quieter and stronger than modern counterparts. Like other appliances, on which advanced tech upgrades aren’t necessarily a good thing, older Cuisinarts have a simpler, more straightforward design — you simply activate switches and a motor goes to work. No fuss, no muss. Just a job well done.
